Job Summary:

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern or Temp to Hire, focusing on optical systems and fluorescence within the biotech industry. This position is ideal for students or recent graduates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields, offering a pathway to hands-on experience in designing and developing advanced optical devices used in fluorescence applications such as microscopy and diagnostic tools. Interns and temporary employees who excel may be considered for full-time employment based on performance and business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Optical System Design: Assist in the mechanical design and development of optical components such as lenses, mirrors, and filters, crucial for fluorescence imaging applications. Utilize CAD tools like SolidWorks for creating precise models and design iterations.
  • Fluorescence Instrumentation: Participate in the integration and mechanical design of devices that rely on fluorescence, working closely with optical engineers to ensure optimal alignment and functionality.
  • Prototyping & Fabrication: Build and test prototypes employing techniques such as 3D printing and CNC machining, focusing on refining designs for enhanced manufacturability and performance.
  • System Testing & Validation: Perform alignment, testing, and calibration of optical systems, ensuring they meet specific performance criteria for fluorescence-based applications.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Engage with electrical engineers and optical engineers to integrate electronic and optical components effectively into mechanical systems. Work alongside R&D teams to meet design and testing objectives.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain detailed records of design processes, testing results, and regulatory compliance efforts to support project development and potential audits.

Education and Experience:

  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optics, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for mechanical design.
  • Basic understanding of optical engineering principles and fluorescence technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping tools (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining) is highly valued.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Skills:
  • Exposure to fluorescence imaging or microscopy techniques.
  • Experience with the alignment and calibration of optical systems.
  • Familiarity with simulation or analysis tools (e.g., FEA or optical simulation).

Compensation:

The estimated base compensation range for this position is $20/hour at the time of posting. Actual compensation details will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
