Standards & Controls
Monitor Every Well. Trust Every Run.
ZymoBIOMICS® kits provide unbiased representation of the organisms extracted from the ZymoBIOMICS® Microbial Community Standard
ZymoBIOMICS® Spike-in Controls are easily detectable in a variety of sample types, providing a reliable recovery control for most microbiome applications
Automation can dramatically improve throughput and reproducibility in microbiome workflows, but only when paired with controls designed to monitor performance at scale. The ZymoBIOMICS® Microbial Community Standard provides a defined mixture of 8 bacteria and 2 yeast spanning a broad range of genome sizes, G/C content, and lysis difficulty, making it an ideal positive extraction control for validating and maintaining run-over-run consistency in automated workflows. The ZymoBIOMICS® Microbial Community DNA Standard complements this by bypassing extraction entirely, enabling users to isolate variability introduced during automated library preparation, normalization, and sequencing. Together, these controls help pinpoint where automation improves reproducibility while highlighting where bias may still be introduced.
The ZymoBIOMICS® Spike-In Controls add another layer of confidence by enabling sample-level tracking of extraction efficiency, cross-contamination, and sample-to-sample variability within automated workflows, while also providing a benchmark for absolute quantification in NGS sequencing analysis. When deployed across workflows, these controls provide the process transparency needed to confidently scale microbiome studies or sequencing service operations while maintaining data quality and comparability.

Sample Collection
Collect Confidently, Anywhere
DNA/RNA Shield™ preserves the microbial profile of samples for more than 30 days at ambient temperature
The ZR BashingBead™ Lysis Rack provides an efficient solution for both rapid sample accessioning and high-throughput lysis
Automation-ready microbiome workflows begin at the point of sample collection, where consistency and stability are critical for downstream processing. DNA/RNA Shield™ collection devices preserve nucleic acid at ambient temperature while immediately stabilizing microbial profiles and inactivating organisms, eliminating need for cold-chain logistics and reducing variability introduced during transport. Because DNA/RNA Shield™ is directly compatible with ZymoBIOMICS® extraction chemistry, samples can be directly integrated into automated extraction pipelines with minimal manual handling. A broad range of pre-filled DNA/RNA Shield™ collection formats, including fecal tubes, swabs, and wipe-based devices, enables consistent sample input across large, distributed studies, making them particularly well suited for high-throughput robotic workflows.
ZR BashingBead™ Lysis Racks further streamline automation by enabling simultaneous mechanical lysis of entire plates in a format compatible with robotic liquid handlers. The rack-based design allows users to process dozens of samples in parallel with uniform bead beating, reducing well-to-well variability while eliminating the need to individually handle tubes. When combined with DNA/RNA Shield™ collection devices, this plate-based lysis approach creates a seamless, automation-friendly workflow that supports scalable microbiome studies with improved reproducibility and throughput.

DNA & RNA Extraction
Automation-Ready, Without Compromise
ZymoBIOMICS® extraction kits provide unbiased representation of the bacteria found in the ZymoBIOMICS® Microbial Community Standard
36 replicates of 200 µl blood samples from the same donor were processed, showing consistent and accurate yields (average A260/230 ≥ 1.8)
Automation-ready extraction requires robust lysis and purification chemistry that maintains unbiased lysis while scaling to high-throughput robotic workflows. The ZymoBIOMICS® 96 MagBead DNA Kit delivers validated, unbiased lysis performance in a plate-based magnetic bead format compatible with both magnetic bead movers and liquid handlers. Built on the same BashingBead™ mechanical disruption approach validated against ZymoBIOMICS® microbial standards, the kit enables efficient recovery of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, archaea, and yeast across diverse sample types. Combined with certified low-bioburden reagents and robust inhibitor removal chemistry, the workflow supports consistent sequencing results while minimizing plate-to-plate and run-to-run variability – critical for large, automated projects and sequencing providers. Pre-optimized scripts, developed by Zymo Research, for common robotic platforms further simplify implementation and reduce development time.
For labs expanding into multi-omic automation, the ZymoBIOMICS® MagBead DNA/RNA Kit extends this same high-throughput architecture to simultaneous DNA and RNA extraction. The workflow enables automated recovery of both nucleic acid types as separate fractions from a single sample input, supporting streamlined metagenomic and metatranscriptomic pipelines without additional manual processing. In automated environments, this dual extraction capability reduces sample handling, preserves limited input material, and ensures matched DNA/RNA datasets across entire plates, providing a scalable foundation for comprehensive microbiome analysis.

NGS Library Prep
Take the Bottleneck Out of NGS
Quick-16S Plus NGS Library Prep Kits offer significant optimization over traditional targeted library prep protocols
Quick-16S Plus NGS Library Prep Kits have consistent and accurate measurements across a wide range of input DNA quantities
High-throughput microbiome studies often stall at library preparation, where input quantification and library normalization create bottlenecks that limit automation and scalability. The Quick-16S™ Plus NGS Library Prep Kits address this challenge with Equalase™ technology, which enables uniform amplification across a wide range of input amounts. As little as 100 femtograms and as much as 100 nanograms can be tolerated by the kit, eliminating the need for sample-by-sample input adjustment. And because amplification outputs are balanced by Equalase™, libraries can be pooled by equal volume rather than manually adjustment of concentrations, removing one of the most time-consuming and automation-unfriendly steps in NGS sequencing workflows.
This normalization-free approach is particularly valuable in robotic environments, where removing quantification and iterative volume adjustments simplifies deck layouts and reduces liquid handling complexity. Pre-aliquoted qPCR premix plates and a streamlined workflow requiring only a single amplification (on or off deck) and clean-up step further reduce overall workflow time. By minimizing intervention points and eliminating normalization, Quick-16S Plus kits provide a linear, plate-based workflow that scales cleanly from tens to thousands of samples.
