Software Development Intern

Job Summary:  

Zymo Research is looking for a dynamic individual to join our Integrated Omics team. This is an exciting opportunity to explore the impact of cutting-edge methods, technologies, and applications in the fields of molecular biology and nucleic acid analysis. Zymo's expertise in providing end-to-end solutions for microbiome research—from sample collection to in-depth bioinformatics analysis will serve as the foundation for the intern's work. 

The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated learner, an effective team player, and possess a strong interest in learning about data science.  This internship is an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of scientific software development. Interns will be expected to deliver high-quality software solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams through the entire development cycle, from concept to deployment. The hands-on experience gained will be invaluable, grounded in the real-world application of bioinformatics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develop and maintain robust and scalable web applications with responsive user interfaces using modern front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React, Svelte, etc. 
  • Design and implement secure, ecient, and reliable server-side code using programming languages like Python, Java, C#, or Node.js. 
  • Develop and integrate APIs, web services, and RESTful interfaces to facilitate seamless communication between front-end and back-end components. 
  • Collaborate with UI/UX designers to create visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces, ensuring an optimal user experience. 
  • Participate in requirements analysis, system design, and so0ware architecture discussions to provide technical expertise and make informed decisions. 
  • Perform thorough testing and debugging to identify and resolve so0ware defects, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, bug-free code. 
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, quality assurance engineers, and other developers, to deliver so0ware projects within specified timelines. 
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in full stack development, and proactively propose and implement innovative solutions. 
  • Collaborate in code reviews, oering constructive feedback and maintaining code quality standards. 
  • Ensure proper documentation of software development processes, including project requirements, technical specifications, and user guides. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. 
  • Solid academic foundation with coursework in web development, programming languages, and software engineering. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of web development technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. 
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as React, Svelte, or similar. 
  • Exposure to server-side programming languages like Python, Java, C#, or Node.js. 
  • Understanding of API development, web services, and RESTful interfaces. 
  • Previous internship or project experience in software development is a plus.

Compensation:  

The estimated base compensation range for this position is $20/hour at the time of posting. Actual compensation details will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
