Software Development Intern

Job Summary:

Zymo Research is looking for a dynamic individual to work on software development projects within our Bioinformatics department. This is an exciting opportunity to explore the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLM) to help scientists process, analyze, and understand their data.

This intern will help explore, develop, and deploy AI-powered applications on a bioinformatics platform to assist users and to deliver AI-driven insights.

The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated learner, an effective team player, and interested in working with scientists and software developers together. Interns will be expected to deliver high-quality software solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams through the entire development cycle, from concept to deployment. The hands-on experience gained will be invaluable, grounded in the real-world application of AI.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with scientists to understand ideas on AI-powered applications and evaluate their feasibilities.
  • Understand existing code base, database structures of our platform and output data formats of bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Develop AI-powered applications using pretrained LLMs with techniques such as prompt engineering and retrieval augmented generation.
  • Support the integration of AI applications into the existing bioinformatics platform infrastructure, working with APIs, databases, and cloud computing resources.
  • Contribute to the development of user interfaces for the bioinformatics platform, ensuring intuitive access to AI-powered tools and results visualization for researchers and clinicians.
  • Participate in code reviews, offering constructive feedback and maintaining code quality standards.
  • Ensure proper documentation of software development processes, including project requirements, technical specifications, and user guides.

Education and Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Solid academic foundation with coursework in web development, programming languages, and software engineering.
  • Understanding of API development, web services, and RESTful interfaces.
  • Proficiency in Python back-end frameworks such as Django or Flask.
  • Proficiency in front-end frameworks React or Next.js is a plus.
  • Experience in developing LLM applications and using AI frameworks is a plus.
  • Previous internship or project experience in software development is a plus.

Compensation:

The estimated base compensation range for this position is $20 per hour at the time of posting. Actual compensation details will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
