Mission to Mars
Optimizing Astronaut Diets for Missions to Mars
For research aboard the International Space Station, NASA turned to DNA/RNA Shield™ to preserve and inactivate biological samples safely. Its unique ability to maintain a stable genetic snapshot while neutralizing biohazards made it the only choice for studying the human microbiome in microgravity—pushing the boundaries of science beyond Earth.
Malaria Elimination
Collection and Inactivation of Malaria in Remote Areas
A malariologist from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMD) aimed to assess one of the biggest challenges in eradicating malaria from the Mekong region of Southeast Asia - identifying asymptomatic carriers of the disease. Traditional sample collection, storage, and preservation devices did not have the portability required for the infectious parasitic disease research in inaccessible regions; nor did they allow detection of low parasitic loads. DNA/RNA Shield™ enabled researchers to safely work in the field and travel internationally while preserving low levels of parasite DNA.
MERS-Cov Surveillance
Tracking MERS-CoV Transmission in the Desert
In order to survey dromedary camels in the Oman desert for Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), researchers at the VetMed University in Vienna needed highly sophisticated, safe sample storage technology. DNA/RNA Shield™ enabled researchers to store samples in the most extreme desert temperatures while providing complete viral inactivation for safe international travel. The samples collected and stored with DNA/RNA Shield™revealed the presence of MERS-CoV in several camels that are closely related to human MERS-CoV, suggesting possible transmission of MERS-CoV from camel to human.
SARS-CoV2 Sequencing
Withstanding Extreme Conditions in Real-World Emergency
In a remarkable real-world test of resilience, researchers in Ecuador experienced a transportation emergency when a vehicle carrying clinical specimens caught fire, exposing the shipment to extreme heat. Despite the intense conditions—burned packaging and prolonged exposure—samples preserved in DNA/RNA Shield™ remained intact for RNA-seq. Upon arrival, the team successfully sequenced SARS-CoV-2 genomes, demonstrating the exceptional stability and reliability of DNA/RNA Shield™ for preserving genetic material even under catastrophic circumstances.
Koala Rehabiliation
Koala-ty Control: Cleaning Up Care Spaces
Researchers investigated how Chlamydia pecorum—a serious bacterial threat to koala health—can persist in rehabilitation settings where animals share space and equipment. Researchers swabbed surfaces before and after cleaning at a care facility in New South Wales, using DNA/RNA Shield™ to preserve the samples for accurate detection. While chlamydial DNA was commonly found, especially on surfaces with direct koala contact, only a few samples contained live bacteria. These findings highlight the need for better disinfection protocols and the critical role of biosecurity surveillance.
Lion Conservation
Shaping the Future of Lion Conservation
Researchers in South Africa are investigating how tuberculosis (TB) and gut microbiome changes impact the health of African lions, a species at risk due to habitat loss, disease, and environmental pressures. During fieldwork in Kruger National Park, scientists used DNA/RNA Shield™ Fecal Collection Tubes and DNA/RNA Shield™ blood tubes to safely preserve lion feces and blood respectively, without refrigeration and ensuring pathogen inactivation and intact genetic integrity. This preservation was critical for accurately studying the role of TB in lion health and supports ongoing efforts to protect these iconic predators and maintain ecosystem balance.
Glacial Microbiome
Glacial Microbes, Preserved with Confidence
Preserving nucleic acids for sequencing in remote, low-biomass environments like glaciers presents significant challenges for field researchers. In a comparative study of microbial communities from Icelandic snow and ice, three preservation methods—flash freezing, RNAlater, and Zymo DNA/RNA Shield™—were evaluated. While all methods performed similarly for DNA in high-biomass samples, Zymo DNA/RNA Shield™ stood out for its superior RNA preservation, especially when compared to RNAlater. Crucially, it offers a practical, high-yield alternative to liquid nitrogen, making it an ideal solution for fieldwork in logistically demanding environments where maintaining sample integrity without cold storage is essential.
Seabird Ecology
Enabling Breakthroughs in Avian Ecology
Scientists are reshaping how we understand and protect avian populations. Braving harsh conditions—including seasickness and the extreme environment of the Antarctic Peninsula—scientists use DNA/RNA Shield™ to preserve fecal samples from seabirds like puffins, terns, and penguins. This powerful preservation technology enables high-throughput DNA extraction and metabarcoding, allowing researchers to accurately analyze diets and monitor biodiversity without sample degradation. Her research provides critical insights into predator-prey interactions and informs sustainable ocean management strategies, with the goal of restoring marine ecosystems to a healthy, balanced state that supports diverse seabird and marine mammal populations.
Therapeautic Discovery
Toxic Algae Therapeutics for Marine Mammals
Scientists launched a vital research collaboration to combat the rising threat of domoic acid (DA) poisoning in marine mammals, especially sea lions. Triggered by climate change and increasingly frequent harmful algal blooms, DA toxicity causes severe neurological and cardiac symptoms in marine life and poses a health risk to humans. With no current treatment available, the initiative preserved samples from affected animals using DNA/RNA Shield™ in the field, conduct RNA sequencing, and analyze gene expression data through Unravel’s AI-driven BioNAV™ platform to identify promising therapeutic candidates. This groundbreaking collaboration not only aims to develop the first effective treatments for DA poisoning but also highlights the broader environmental and public health implications of oceanic toxin exposure.
