Cancer Immunotherapy
Traditional cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, are non-specific, attacking healthy tissue as well as cancer cells which causes extreme side effects. Cancer immunotherapy overcomes this problem by utilizing the patient's own immune system to specifically target only cancer cells. Scientists set out to develop a more powerful immunotherapy by creating a genetically engineered multifunctional exosome that both guides and stimulates T cells towards killing cancer cells. To generate the exosomes, transfection-grade plasmid vectors encoding the exosome were purified using ZymoPURE II Plasmid Kits and then transfected into a human cell line. These genetically engineered multifunctional exosomes successfully targeted cancer cells and inhibited tumor growth in a mouse model for triple-negative breast cancer more effectively than exosomes that only guided or stimulated T cells. Pathogen Surveillance
Rabies is a fatal viral disease that accounts for ~60,000 human deaths annually, making detection and epidemiological tracking critical to prevention. Conventional post-mortem rabies testing requires highly skilled technicians and can only be performed with fresh tissue. To help make rabies testing more accessible, researchers developed a simple rabies assay that utilizes RT-PCR to amplify and identify a conserved genomic region of the rabies virus, even in deteriorated or fixed tissue. Viral RNA from brain stem samples originating from rabies-suspected animals spanning across the globe were extracted using the Direct-zol RNA Miniprep Kit to ensure high quality RNA was recovered from the lipid-rich tissue and used for the assay. The assay enabled successful detection of the rabies virus even in samples unsuitable for traditional testing. Learn more about this research.
Water Conservation
Water conservation is a growing concern with increasing pressure to reduce stress on groundwater resources. The world's largest potable water reuse facility, which recharges municipal groundwater with 100 million gallons of water per day, performed metagenomic sequencing to assess the effectiveness of their wastewater treatment system. All wastewater samples were stored in DNA/RNA Shield to preserve the nucleic acids at ambient temperatures and the ZymoBIOMICS DNA/RNA Miniprep Kit was used for nucleic acid extractions to ensure downstream microbial profiling was unbiased and accurate. With these solutions, researchers were able to detect potential human pathogens and verify that their treatment was effective in transforming wastewater into potable water. Learn more on this study.
Cell Therapy
Ischemic stroke accounts for 87% of all strokes, but existing treatments must be administered immediately to be effective and are unable to repair any tissue damage caused by stroke. To overcome these challenges, researchers developed a cell therapy using fibroblasts that were reprogrammed by transfecting with plasmids encoding development transcription factors known to induce intracranial vasculogenesis using a novel non-viral nanochannel-driven gene delivery system. The plasmids encoding these transcription factors were purified using the ZymoPURE II Plasmid Midiprep Kit, to ensure transfection-grade quality plasmid DNA. It was found that delivery of the reprogrammed fibroblasts into a mouse model of ischemic stroke repaired stroke damage and significantly improved locomotive skills, demonstrating the potential of this therapy for treating ischemic stroke. Consistently Recover RNA of All Sizes
High-quality, intact, small and large RNA are efficiently recovered using a Direct-zol™ RNA kit compared to using a Supplier Q kit. RNA is DNA-free and ready for all downstream applications, including NGS.
"Excellent for most RNA, including microRNA. Efficient, easy, time saver. In my opinion, the only ...column-based RNA extraction system that efficiently recovers small RNA (including miRNA)."

Achieve Unbiased Microbial Lysis
The ZymoBIOMICS DNA Miniprep Kit provides unbiased representation of the organisms extracted from the ZymoBIOMICS Microbial Community Standard. DNA was extracted from the ZymoBIOMICS Microbial Community Standard using four different DNA extraction methods (ZymoBIOMICS DNA Miniprep Kit, Human Microbiome Project Protocol, Supplier M, and Supplier Q) and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
"This kit has the most efficient lysis of all species with a very easy protocol. The unbiased lysis provides credible data and doesn't risk the most expensive downstream analysis."
